Gaining access to groundwater requires the practice of water well drilling. This process involves creating a deep excavation in the ground, then encasing it with a secure barrier to inhibit cave-ins and prevent any contamination. A specialized pump is responsible for pulling the water up from deep within the well.

Digging for water has been around for eons, first popping up in China during the Neolithic. The history of water well drilling in the United States began near Boston in the year 1627, and has since escalated into an essential industry supplying an abundance of water to residential, commercial, and farming areas.

Dug wells, the simplest and most ancient kind of water well, are constructed by hand and typically range from a few feet to twenty feet deep. On the other hand, drilled wells are created by using a specialized drill to bore down into the ground. In some cases, drilled wells can reach as far as hundreds of feet and tap into underground sources of groundwater under enormous pressure.

The process of drilling into the earth to access a water well is a risky undertaking. Not only must one concern themselves with the risk of plummeting levels if one missteps near the gaping abyss below, but also with being struck by debris and potentially being exposed to hazardous chemicals. It is therefore essential that all safety regulations be followed to minimize any potential risks.

For a successful water well drilling project, the first step is to scout for a location. Finding the perfect spot typically requires that a site is cleared of any obstacles, levelled, and excavated – all above the water table and with enough room for the necessary equipment.

Down through the earth a hole is bored, with a special drill and a drill rig to rotate the bit at its tip. But it doesn’t stop there. To keep the well defended and clean, a steel pipe is tightly placed within the hole, guarding against any caving in or contaminants. Water is sent down too, to low the heat emitted by the drill, and to gradually discard any remnants of drilling.

The ground yields to the powerful twisting of the drill bit, allowing a specially designed steel casing to be inserted and secured in place. Finally, the hole is cemented with concrete in order to avoid collapse of the structure and preserve its cleanliness from contaminants.

After the concrete surrounding the well has solidified, a mechanism is put into place to draw the water out. This device runs on either an electricity-powered motor or a gas-fired engine and transports the fluid through pipes leading to a storage tank or directly to an individual abode or industrial establishment.

Delivering indispensable life-sustaining liquid to residences, corporations, and crop-growing domains, water well drilling is an essential industry that is hazardous to its employees. Nevertheless, they undertake protective efforts to ensure as little peril as possible.
