Acquiring access to groundwater aquifers in Crockett, Texas necessitates the process of drilling a hole in the ground – referred to as water well drilling. For generations, this practice has been employed to tap into water resources for everything from drinking and irrigation to various other activities. Located in Houston County, Texas, the city of Crockett is home to 6,950 people according to the 2010 census. It is considered the seat of Houston County and located along the distinctive Crockett fault line that passes through it.

George W. Bonner had the honor of constructing the first water well in 1837 that eventually established Crockett’s foundation of water systems. His well was located on the south side of Crockett Street in the district between Second and Third Streets. Following his successful attempt, other landowners in town were roused to install their own wells. Finally, by 1856, the settlement of Crockett was proud to inaugurate the Crockett Water Works Company which provided sustaining sources of water by way of drilling wells and setting up a reservoir, a pumping station, along with pipes to connect them all together.

Despite its success, the Crockett Water Works Company eventually proved inadequate to the task of meeting the city’s ever-increasing water demand. In response, in 1884 the city of Crockett contracted the Houston and Great Northern Railroad Company to obtain an improved system. This entailed various new wells being drilled, as well as a brand-new pumping station being constructed, which was strong enough to meet the city’s water requirements for a considerable period.

As the city of Crockett progressed and the populace’s thirst for water became evermore intense, the Texas Company (now known as Exxon) was brought in to drill new wells and design a new water system. This system included the installation of a fresh reservoir, a supple pump facility and an assemblage of new pipes. This improved system allowed residents to be adequately hydrated for many years after.

The city of Crockett, in the late 1900s, was struggling with a deficit of water once again. Consequently, it contacted the Texas Water Development Board to devise a solution. The board responded by creating a new system consisting of a reservoir, pumping station, and pipe network. This system supplied Crockett’s water requirements suitably for many years to come.

Crockett has a storied tradition of drilling for water that goes back almost two centuries. Around the 1830s, people in the city dug their first wells and, throughout the years, they’ve kept penetrating the earth in order to create new systems of supply that meet the ever-changing demand for aqua. Presently, Crockett enjoys an efficient setup, featuring a large reservoir, a set of pumps, and a vast array of pipes.
