In the 1970s, the Soviet Union undertook a remarkable scientific endeavor to explore the depths of the Earth’s crust. Dubbed the Kola Superdeep Borehole, this drilling project was a record-breaking success, unearthing the unseen mysteries of the Earth’s mantle by drilling a staggering 40,230 feet (12,262 meters). Never before had man reached such depths with a hole dug by man alone.

A deep burrow, known as the Kola Superdeep Borehole, lies within the region of Pechengsky in Murmansk Oblast, Russia. It was laboriously created between the span of 1970 to 1983.

Measuring a lofty 49,213 feet in length – or an impressive 15,006 metres – this borehole descends with its 9-inch width and curves downwards, encased in a 7-inch metal cylinder.

For 13 years, the Kola Superdeep Borehole was drilled in two distinct phases. From 1970 to 1974, the borehole was pushed to a depth of 12,262 meters, and the effort resumed in 1977, breaking through to nearly 40,230 feet (12,262 meters) by 1983.

Piercing through Earth’s crust, the Kola Superdeep Borehole is seven times as deep as the Mariana Trench, the greatest naturally occurring depth on our planet. An artificial abyss, it indeed stands alone as the world’s deepest point.
